About Maurits

I was born in 1985 in Brielle and discovered at a young age that a camera helped me notice details that would otherwise remain unseen. In 2017, photography found its way back to me, and during a trip to Bali it took hold of me like never before.

What began as experimenting with a phone quickly grew into a serious passion. My camera became a constant travel companion, and my camera bag steadily filled up — sometimes a little too heavy, but that comes with the territory.

Travel photography became my great love, but my curiosity extended further. During my studies at the Nederlandse Academie voor Beeldcreatie, I found my place in the studio: the calm, the process of building images layer by layer, and shaping light with intention. That is where my passion for fine art portraits and still lifes truly emerged.

In the studio, I control the atmosphere, the light and the outcome — everything my work needs, forming the foundation for artistic images that go beyond mere documentation.

About my style

Photography has never been just about capturing a moment for me. I want to create something with meaning — images that feel calm, yet stay with you. In fine art portraits and still lifes, I find space for my creativity: my love of light, of detail, and of images that speak in silence.

In my work, I am always searching for layers. A glance, a posture, a fall of light that reveals something beyond what you first see. The Dutch Masters inspire me in the way they used light to build atmosphere. I translate that feeling into my own style: images that hold a certain stillness, yet carry depth and character.

My portraits are never created in haste. I take the time to truly see someone and to explore together what may be expressed. With still lifes, I work slowly and carefully, layer by layer, until everything feels right. These are images you do not fully grasp at a glance — they ask you to stay a little longer.

Technique is never an end in itself. Light, colour, texture: everything plays a role, but always in service of the feeling. I look for that moment when everything falls into balance and you sense: yes, this is right.

I am critical of my own work, because I believe photography can be more than just a photograph. I want my images to evoke something, to resonate — to be hung on a wall because they express what words cannot.

My drive is simple: to create art that invites you to slow down. Images that are gentle, yet speak. Photography in which attention, craft and emotion come together.

That is what I create — and what I intend to keep creating.
